What Happens When Pacifists Are Faced With War?

We get thrown in jail for refusing to sign oaths, protest the use of violence, provide safety to individuals, aid the injured on both sides -- and even bury Hessians in our graveyards.

For the first time, Haddonfield's Quakers have decided to tell the their side of the story ...

Join us as we welcome people to our spaces throughout the day!

As an historically Quaker town, it’s important to include Quakers’ diverse perspectives during Haddonfield’s annual revolutionary war reenactment. Many Quakers remained neutral during the conflict and payed dearly for their convictions. Other well-known Quakers, such as Betsy Ross and Nathaneal Greene, chose to fight for independence. Even though remaining devout pacifists, Quakers Robert Townsend and Lydia Darragh ended up spying for the colonial cause.

Join us as we let people know that Quakers still exist, educate them on our values, and share our complicated roles during the conflict.

Since all of our activities will take place outside, it’s also a perfect way to stay “COVID safe.”

Quaker Space Equals Quiet Space

We’re opening all of our outside grounds during the skirmish for families to get away from the loud cannons and musket noise on Kings Highway (at the intersection of Friends Avenue). We’ll host information on colonial-era medicine and the Quakers’ roles as medics, create a graveyard scavenger hunt, play colonial-era games and provide “hospitality” (water and snacks) throughout the day.

We’re also encouraging families to bring picnics or take-out lunches to our grounds.

Integrating Our School Community: Quaker "SPICES" In Action

One Haddonfield Friends School (HFS) class plans on creating signs explaining the Quaker “SPICES”: simplicity, peace, integrity, community, equality and stewardship.

Join us as we welcome people to our "Quaker spaces" throughout the day!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!: RE-ENACTORS, SET UP, PEOPLE AT EVENT STATIONS, ETC.

We need volunteers to help us set up the event starting Friday afternoon (June 3rd), “manning” our various activity stations through the skirmish day on Saturday (June 4th – or the rain date of Sunday, June 5th), and breaking down tables and activities either Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

We’re also looking for adult and children reenactors to work as a group of colonial-era Quakers on Kings Highway (in front of Borough Hall) for a quick “walkthrough” while handing out earplugs prior to the 2 p.m. skirmish. (One of our adult Quakers is playing Haddonfield Quaker Thomas Redman, who will be jailed for refusing to pledge an oath to the new colonial government. Don't worry! He'll only "serve time" for five minutes in this reenactment!)

(or find me in the 5th grade directory of Parent Square) if you're interested in joining in!
